Helen M. Hirsch, 92, died peacefully on July 5, 2017 at St. Gabriel’s Community, Bismarck.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Rev. Christina Martin officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Helen was born October 24, 1924 to Charles and Emma Valenta at their home in the small southeastern farming community of Adrian, North Dakota. She grew up with two brothers and a sister. After graduating from high school in nearby Dickey, ND, Helen enrolled at St. Alexius Hospital School of Nursing in Bismarck and graduated in 1945 with a degree in nursing. While working as a registered nurse for Drs. Henderson and Orr in Bismarck, she met Fred Hirsch. After a brief courtship they married in 1946 in Valley City, ND.

Helen enjoyed staying at home and raising their four children, but decided to return to nursing when Heartview Foundation opened its doors in Mandan. In 1971, she changed jobs and began helping her son Steven at his business, Hirsch Florist. When Fred retired from the telephone company, Helen retired from the flower shop and together, they spent 25 wonderful winters in Mesa, Arizona. Helen and Fred were married 50 years before his death in 2008.

Helen’s family always looked forward to her delicious pumpkin bars and brownies. She was also known to have a bottomless pitcher of her “famous” Kool-Aid in the fridge.

She will be missed by her children, Merry Wetsch, Steven Hirsch, and David (Fatima) Hirsch; son-in-law, Tracy Stein; grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Jessen, Jamie (Missy) Wetsch, Emily (Tyler) Laycock, and Vinicius Hirsch; 8 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Valenta.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Fred in 2008; a daughter, Janna Stein; her parents; and a brother, Harry and sister, Shirley.

The family wishes to thank the staff on Patterson at St. Gabriel’s and CHI Hospice for the care they gave Helen.
