An Olympic gold medallist. He won the hammer throw at the 1920 Games in Antwerp, and also won silver in the 56 pound weight (the only time this event was held). He emigrated to the United States in 1910 and was not able to compete in the 1912 Games as he had not yet become a US citizen. He joined the New York City Police and served in Europe in WWI, then returned to Antwerp for the first post war Games. It is reported that he had over indulged on French wine the night before his hammer event was held and he needed to be revived with a few whiskeys. Whatever, he was still able to win comfortably. He returned to Ireland in 1924 to manage the family farm.
