My Mother died today at 94 years old(06/12/20/18). She had multiple medical problems and was tired of living. She tried hard to keep going but her body just gave out.
My mother was born in Chicago to Gottfred and Esther Wiberg. She was born on February 9th, 1924. She was the youngest of 4 children; Ethel, Nels, Corinne were her siblings. She went to Fenger High School and after high school went to work at a local bank. She met my father at a bar - he was stationed on Navy Pier. She often told me that she had a horrible cold when she met him but he still wanted to date her. They married on August 21, 1944. They had four children - George(Sue) Bill, Susan(Bob) and Nancy(Cliff).
Elsie and George lived at first in Syracuse, NY and later moved to Huntington Valley, Pa. They lived in a wonderful neighborhood and made many friends. She had a monthly sewing circle with her neighbors and a bimonthly Tripoli card game night. They often went with a group of neighbors to Red Rock in the Poconos where they had wonderful times. Every October they had a dress-up Halloween party and they all made their own costumes.
Elsie had 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; she had 3 step-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren.
My mother was a homemaker all of her life. She kept our home beautifully and was a wonderful cook. Every Christmas we had a Smorgesborg and the food was delightful. She made the best Swedish meatballs - they were divine....My mother's parents were both from Sweden so we followed many of their customs.
My mother was an excellent seamstress and knitter. She made many of my clothes and sweaters while I was growing up. She was a talented embroiderer and did beautiful counted cross stitch. She did many beautiful projects for me which I will cherish always. She knitted and crocheted many blankets and Afghans for family and friends.
My mother was an opinionated, hard-headed person that wanted only her opinion to matter. She decided to be the only one to drive when we were teenagers and would not let any of us get behind the wheel. She wanted to move to Florida and gave my father no choice. He was depressed the entire time he lived here. When things got hard to tolerate with my father, she insisted that I move down here and help her. I did that and for 16 years helped with my father. It was very stressful to me to watch this woman not follow MD orders. When my sister( and by my mother's own admission was her favorite) moved to the area, my mother alienated me from my family with cruel stories and actions. My mother never understood what depression was and because of this, my father never recovered. She definitely had favorite children and made that obvious at the end of her life. She made some very poor choices which ultimately cost her an unhappy end of her life(malnutrition and severe heart disease). The last time I talked to her she asked me to forgive her for all that she did....But now she is at peace and I will remember her as a very good person, mother, and friend. She will be missed....
