Caroline Martha Mullis was born Sep 10, 1825 in Surry Co., NC, the oldest of 5 children born to George Mullis, Sr. and Mary Ann Wysong. George and Mary Ann had 2 daughters and 3 sons - the youngest son was born between 1830 - 1835 and died between 1840 - 1850. Their children were: Caroline Martha (Roark Harper); William Morgan; Wyley; and Elizabeth (Sparger). Caroline married James A. Roark before 1847 - probably in GA. James and Caroline had 7 children - 4 sons and 3 daughters. Their children were: William W.; John W.; Wylie G. P.; Martha Ann (Plaster); Mary Elizabeth (Kelley); Mathena Amendy (Wells); and James A. There is a son, Charles Henry Harrison Roark listed in the 1850 and 1860 census, but I believe he is a son of James, but not of Caroline because he is listed last in the 1860 census, as if he doesn't belong to Caroline.

James Roark died before 1860 and Caroline married James Harper. She is in the 1870 census with him, but he is not with her in the 1880 census. Did he die, were they divorced? I haven't been able to find out.

In 1830 Caroline is in Surry Co., NC with her parents and 2 of her brothers and a daughter from George Mullis, Sr.'s first marriage. George is listed as George Mullice, and they are living next door to Ambrose Mullice and his new wife, a son from George's first marriage. George Mullis, Sr. died in about 1832 and Caroline's mother, Mary Ann, married Zedekiah Meyers, so Caroline is in Surry Co., NC with her mother and step-father, her 2 brothers and her sister and 3 of her half-brothers. Caroline is 15. By 1850 Caroline has married James A. Roark - they are living in West Chickamauga, Walker Co., GA with their oldest 2 sons, Charles H. H. - a son that might not be Caroline's, and possibly James' mother that has remarried. They are on the same census page as Caroline's mother, Meyers half-siblings and Mullis siblings.

By 1860 James A. Roark has died, so Caroline is living in Walker Co., GA with 6 of her childen and Charles H. H. that might not be her child. They are on the same census page as her 2 brothers. Caroline is 33. In 1870 she is living in Franklin Co., AR with her second husband, James Harper, 2 of his children and 2 of her children. Brothers Wyley and John W. are living next door. Caroline is 44. By 1880 Caroline is living with her daughter Mathena Amendy (Minnie on the census), her husband William Wells, 2 of their children, brother Wyley and some boarders. Caroline is called Martha Harper and is 52.

I have not been able to find any additional information on Caroline after 1880.

Caroline is my 3rd Great Grandmother.
