John Hartwell Battle was born in Nash County, North Carolina, son of John Battle and Rhoda Williams Rix (Ricks). He moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, then to Muscogee County, Georgia. He later settled in Barnett, Warren County, Georgia with his family. He married Polly Bailey, the daughter of Pierce Bailey and Nancy Duncan.
