Iris M. Anderson, 93, passed away on June 30, 2017. Iris was born in Pittsburg, PA, on July 21, 1923, to Swen and Hilma Swensson. Iris was married for 71 years to Robert P. Anderson, who pre-deceased her by 12 days. Iris was the youngest of 3 children, raised in a Swedish community in Chicago. She was a graduate of North Park University. She earned a RN nursing degree and was first employed as a surgical nurse at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago. She married her husband in 1946. After Bob received his doctoral degree, they moved to Austin in 1952 and then to Lubbock in 1955, where Bob assumed a faculty position in psychology. Bob and Iris remained Lubbock residents for 62 years, including 37 years in Ransom Canyon and their final 12 years at Carillon Community. Iris returned to school in the early 1960's, receiving a BA in Speech and Hearing. Along with Bob, she was a pioneer in working with learning disabled children, serving as director of an after school program for learning disabled children at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in the 1960's and 1970's until public schools began offering these services. She completed a Master's degree in school psychology, and worked for 25 years as a school psychological associate in various Lubbock county school districts. Iris served as an Alderwoman and volunteer fireperson at Ransom Canyon in the 1970's. With her husband she enjoyed sailboating, hiking and backpacking, and river rafting. Iris and Bob traveled extensively, beginning with family camping trips to New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Seattle World's Fair, followed by many international locations in Europe, Asia and South America. They especially enjoyed their Swedish Heritage, with numerous trips to Sweden to maintain and develop contacts with extended family members. She and Bob were faithful patrons of the arts community in Lubbock. Iris is survived by sons Merrill (Kathleen Senior) of Longmont, Colorado and Stephen (Diane G rin -Lajoie) of Toronto, Canada, and grandchildren, Nathan, Spencer, M lanie, and Lindsay. Iris was matriarch of her family, and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews on her side of the family and by a nephew, Ronald Allen, and cousin, Kim Dahlin Cain of Lubbock, on her husband's side. Memorial service for Iris and Bob will be held on July 15, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Neil Chapel at Carillon. Donations can be made to the Carillon Foundation.
