Born in 1940 in Maplewood, he was the son of the late Leonard J. and Ruth Pelham Black. He was the valedictorian of his graduating class of the Lake Consolidated School. Roger was of the Methodist faith and was a member of Salem Lodge 330 F&AM. Before his retirement, he had been employed as a transportation driver in the modular building industry. He was an Army veteran.
Roger enjoyed playing golf and watching NASCAR on Sundays with his family and friends.
Surviving are his children, John Black and his wife, Missy, of Lake Ariel; Tammy Bortree and her husband, Craig, of Lords Valley; Dawn Toomes of Hollisterville, Scott Black and his wife, Linda, of Lakeville; Nicole Chapman and her husband, Bob, of Lake Ariel; and Stacy Black of Hollisterville; brothers, the Rev. Wilbur and Brian Black, both of Lake Ariel; Paul Black of Jefferson Twp., and Virgil of Mississippi; sisters, Ruth Ann Hollister of Waynesboro, Pa., Juanita Pugh of Lake Ariel and Vivian Bartlow of Duryea; grandchildren, Lilian Black and Madison and AJ Rossignol; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a stepson, John Myers, in 2003
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Road, Lake Ariel, with the Rev. Bill Schneider officiating.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Interment with military honors in Maplewood Evangelical Cemetery, Maplewood.
