Icelandic murderess. She and Bjarni Bjarnason (1761-1805) murdered their respective spouses in 1802 in Sjöundá, Iceland. The infamous case became known as the Morðin á Sjöundá (The Sjöundá Murders). They were both arrested, tortured and sentenced to death. However, as it was not legal to perform executions in Iceland, the authorities planned to send them to Norway. She died in prison before she could be sent, but Bjarni Bjarnason was executed there in1805. The events have been the subject of two plays and a 1938 novel "Svartfugl" written by Gunnar Gunnarsson. Also known as "Steinunn á Sjöundá," she was finally given a tombstone in 2012 after a lengthy battle for recognition by her descendants.
