Sally B. Wheeler
Born: January 6, 1924 Died: November 30, 2020

Sally was born in Ottumwa, IA January 6, 1924, the only child born to Lucius and Estella Burch. The family soon moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where she lived until her marriage. She attended Graceland College in Iowa where her roommate was Laura Wheeler of Medina, TX. At Laura's suggestion Sally began writing to Laura's brother Carl who was serving with the 7th Army Medical Corps in Africa. After three years of correspondence they were married August 7, 1948 in Grand Rapids and moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. She received a B.S. in Home Economics in 1951 and a Master's in Library Science in 1961. She was employed by the Austin Independent School District eight years teaching home economics and 19 years as a librarian.

An avid reader she had several favorite authors and an eclectic reading list. She enjoyed reference work and became the genealogist for her mother's family, the John Hartnells of England, Canada and the U.S. In 1995 she published a 572 page Hartnell family history.
She and Carl spend many enjoyable summer vacations visiting newly discovered relatives in the U.S. and Canada and took trips to Europe and Australia. Her sense of humor, generous spirit and ready smile made her an enjoyable companion. She touched countless lives and forged deep and lasting friendships over the years.

She loved animals and always had a dog or cat or both living with her. Her favorites were Spooky, her black and white cat and Sweetie, a miniature Schnauzer.

A devoted member of the Community of Christ she enjoyed the fellowship and activities it offered. Her faith sustained and guided her all her life and she never doubted God had a plan for her life.

An expert seamstress Sally enjoyed interior decorating and dressmaking. Her greatest pleasure was tailoring cardigan style jackets for her husband.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Carl of 53 years. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lorayne Wheeler of Austin, many nephews, nieces, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews along with special friends Manuel and Cindy Tamayo.
Sally requested that all memorials go to Outreach International.

Funeral arrangements by Harrell Funeral Homes. A virtual memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 10th, 2021 at 2 p.m. CST.
