NELDA MARIE SMITH
July 31, 1930 ~ July 5, 2017

Nelda Marie Smith passed from this life on July 5, 2017 at her home in Willow with family by her side.

Nelda was born on July 31, 1930 to James Lester Thacker and Gladys Williams (Coop) Thacker in Granite, OK.

She grew up on a farm southwest of Granite, attended Ozark School and graduated from Granite High School. She attended SWOSC for one year and then moved to Oklahoma City where she worked briefly.

Nelda married Leonard Harris Smith on March 25, 1951 in Granite. They lived in Brinkman and then moved to Willow where they ran a family grocery business. They enjoyed each other, their children, and grandchildren until his untimely death in 1993. She resided in Willow for the rest of her life.

The most important thing to Nelda was to be a strong Christian example of a Godly woman. She did this by revolving her life around her husband, children, and grandchildren. Nelda was the ultimate homemaker, Sunday school teacher, and friend. She was always everyone’s Nana, always involved in the activities of her grandchildren, baking cookies for their teams even when they were in college.

Nelda was also an Inspector for the Greer County Election for many years, member of the Quilting Guild, the Extension Homemakers Club, and won many awards at the county fair for her exquisite baking.

She enjoyed gardening, nature, birds, music, and decorating. She especially enjoyed the holidays making her home a beautiful place for her family to come home to and always filled with love.

Nelda is survived by one son Harris Brent Smith and wife Jenna of Edmond, Ok, daughters Cindy Driskill and husband Philip of Edmond, Ok, Brenda Clegg and husband Monty of Arlington, Texas, Terri Hamilton and husband Ken of Mangum, Ok and Robin Smith of Claremore, OK, and one sister Leona Strong of Ada, OK.

Nelda leaves a legacy of thirteen grandchildren; Dara Tinius and husband Ben, Lindsay Driskill, Ryan Driskill, Jared Smith and wife Katee, Nick Smith and wife Christy, Erin Westervelt and husband Duston, Sarah Partain and husband Dillon, Molly Hamilton, Logan Hamilton, Hilary, Zachary, Taylor, and Shenna Smith, great-grandchildren Aidan and Cora Tinius, Asher Smith, Timber, Destiny, and Taylor Westervelt, Josie Smith, Emma and Leroy Partain.

Nelda is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

TRIBUTES
*Your mom was a kind-hearted, beautiful lady. I have so many good memories of spending time in your home when I was growing up. The love and devotion you displayed during these last months of her life on earth gave her great comfort. I stopped by and spent a few minutes with her about six weeks ago. She seemed so comfortable and content, lying in bed by the window with all those beautiful flowers outside. We had a great visit. Your dad was taken from this life suddenly and you didn't get a chance to say good-bye to him, but you had months at the end of your mom's life to let her know how much she meant to you, and you did so by devoting your time to her. I'm not sure which way is best - all I know is that we should live each day as if it is our last on earth. Nelda's passing leaves an emptiness in your hearts and in the community at Willow, but she had a wonderful life and has gone on to an even better one. May God bless you. My prayers are with you and your families.

*....I fell in love with the family of Nelda & Harris. Their Christian home was always a warm, loving place to be and Nelda made it lovely for her family & friends. The care and love given to her by her family through these months is a true tribute to a beautiful and wonderful woman. Our prayers are that God will help ease your pain and give comfort as He only can. Love to you.
