*In 1830 Ellen is in Franklin Co., TN with her parents, 1 sibling and 1 slave. *In 1840 she is in Franklin Co., TN with her parents, 5 of her siblings and 1 slave. After Ellen married John their oldest child, a son, died in 1849. *In 1850 she is in Franklin Co., TN with her husband and John's younger brother. John is a farmer. *In 1860 Ellen is in Bell Co., TX with her husband and 4 of her children. *In 1870 she is in Williamson Co., TX with her husband and 8 of her children. *In 1880 Ellen is in Stephens Co., TX with her husband and 6 of her children.
John enlisted in the Civil War in Jan 1862 and served for two years - until Jan 1864 and was gone most of the time. I know this must have been so hard for Ellen - she was left with 5 small children to care for and support.
Ellen will die May 30, 1884 in Bowie, Montague Co., TX. Her 6th child, Edward Rather will die a week earlier - May 23, 1884. I would assume both of them were seriously ill and did not survive whatever illness then had. Ellen was almost 57 years old.
Ellen is my 2nd Great Grandmother.
