SOUTH BEND - Mr. Jewel M. Rogers, a resident of North Johnson Street, South Bend, Indiana departed from this life at 10:10 a.m., Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at the age of 87, in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Jewel was born in Prentis, Mississippi to Javan and Alberta (Davis) Rogers on January 10, 1930. Coming from Prentis, he had lived in South Bend since 1947. He graduated from High School and served his country in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 when he was honorably discharged. Jewel and Paula Witherspoon were united in marriage on September 12, 2009.

Jewel retired from Allied Stamping (EWI) after 30 years of employment. He also was the owner of Loving Hands Day Care Ministry for nine years. Jewel was a charter member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church as one of the 18 members when the church was established in 1982. In 1969 he became a Deacon and also served as the Chairman of the Deacon's Board; and Superintendent of Sunday School and Teacher. For 17 years he was President of the choir, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Sam Frison.

Surviving along with his wife, Paula; are six daughters, Sharon Rogers of Indianapolis, Indiana, Connie Gray of Detroit, Michigan, Jewels Rogers, Shania Rogers, Dreyanna Rogers, and Sherry Simmons (Harold, deceased), all of South Bend, Indiana; four sons, Gregory Rogers of Rochester, New York, Lorenzo Rogers, Mishawaka, Indiana, Brandon Rogers, and DeAndra Rogers, both of South Bend, Indiana; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lowrey Jean (Kenneth) Husband of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Martha Jean (Melvin) Pack of Hattisburg, Mississippi, Augustine (Earnest) Morris of Austin, Texas, and Hattie (Gus) Bronson of Jackson, Mississippi; four brothers, Orvis (Alice) Rogers, Javan (Elvira, deceased) Rogers Jr., and Paul (Gloria) Rogers, all of South Bend, Indiana, and Glen ((Barbara) Rogers of Seattle, Washington; sister-in-law, Barbara Rogers of Prentis, Mississippi; god-children, Ta`Seer Mullings, Ta`Marrion Richey, Promise Robinson, and Zakhi Edwards; friends, the Frison family, Kayla Weatherspoon, Tony Miller and Armon Frison, all of South Bend, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen (Smith) Rogers; a daughter, Bonnee Jean Ross; great-grandson, Arsenio Smith Jr.; brother, Audrey Rogers; and a favorite cousin, Ollisteen Miles.

Funeral services for Mr. Jewel Rogers will be held at 12:00 noon, Friday, July 14, 2017 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow. Friends may call from 6:00 - 8:00

Thursday evening, July 13, 2017 at Alford's Mortuary where arrangements have been entrusted.
