DENTON, TX: A funeral service celebrating the life of Virgil Lee Anderson, age 95, of Denton, Texas, formerly of Buckeye Lake, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 7, at the Lighthouse Memorial Church, 2600 Walnut Road, Millersport, with Pastor Bill Beard officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Rose Hill Burial Park in Springfield with Rev. Charles Seymour officiating. Military honors will be observed at the graveside service. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, at Criss Wagner Hoskinson Funeral Home, 179 Granville Street, Newark.

Virgil was born May 31, 1922 in Washington Courthouse, Ohio, to the late Edward Franklin and Jenny Eliza (Hurles) Anderson. He passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Vitas Hospice Unit at Baylor Hospital in Carrollton, Texas.

Virgil married Donna Louise (Rexroth) Anderson on May 11, 1940 in Greenup, Kentucky. They recently celebrated 76 years of marriage. He was a former deacon and member of the Lighthouse Memorial Church, Millersport, Ohio.

During World War II, Virgil served in the United States Army where he was assigned to the 749th Railway Division, Southwest Pacific in the Philippines, Indo China, and Korea. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and performed duties as a brakeman and freight conductor. He earned the United States Army Good Conduct Medal, the Asian-Pacific Medal with one Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal, the World War II Philippine Liberation Medal, along with a Meritorious Unit Award. After the war, he worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad where he retired as a Conductor after 44 years. In 1946, Virgil moved next to the Licking County Children's Home in Newark, Ohio, where he would fix children's toys. He also lived in Chillicothe, Newark, and Buckeye Lake, Ohio. With over 30 years in the Buckeye Lake community, Virgil served as a Communications Dispatcher for the Ohio Civil Defense Corps and volunteered for the American Red Cross at Newark Memorial Hospital. Virgil has resided in Denton, Texas, for the past 12 years.

He will be remembered by his son and daughter-in-law, Virgil Dale and Martha Anderson of Denton, Texas; two grandsons, Barry Dale Anderson of Circleville, Ohio, and Jeffrey Lee Anderson of Mason, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Ben, Jonah, and Chloe. He also has two step-grandchildren, Gregory D. Epley Jr. and Jennifer A. Brinson of Denton, Texas; and five step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Louise (Rexroth) Anderson on May 19, 2016; sisters, Meda L. Anderson, Aldena Leota Dunn, Virginia Roberta Neill, Amelia C. Seymour, Carrie Beth McConoughe and Cornelia Jane Gilmore; and brothers, George C. and Ward F. Anderson.
