Blakely Funeral Home and Crematory obituary

Spartanburg, S.C. - Dan Ray Arrowood, 94, husband of Mary Tucker Arrowood affectionately known as "Daddy Dan" by his grandchildren, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 5, 2017.

Born January 30, 1923 in Concord, N.C., he was a son of the late Eskine Bruce Arrowood and Delphia Mills Arrowood.

Mr. Arrowood graduated from Concord High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree in textile manufacturing from N. C. State University where he received a full football scholarship, and in 1948 graduated with highest honors in N.C. State's School of Textiles. He was also an Eagle Scout and received the Blue Key Honors Award, Sigma Tau Sigma Cup, with Honors diploma.

He was a member of Fernwood Baptist Church where he was active until his older years. He served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, served on many building committees, and sang tenor in the Church choir. He also was the youngest deacon ever at Hartsville First Baptist Church and also where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Training Union teacher in Hartsville and Spartanburg and both Sunday School and Training Union Director. He also had strong ties to Presbyterian Church with Arrowood family ministers.

He had many fond memories of his annual beach trip to Windy Hill with First Baptist Hartsville members, the Vickerys, the Goudelocks and Arrowoods. He also had close ties to the Nichols and Pitts families in Hartsville.

He was a former president of the Optimist Club and was involved with the American Legion Post #28 where he donated his dress Army Air Corps uniform, which he was married in, to their military museum.

In retirement Dan and Mary served for many years with Spartanburg's Mobile Meals. Dan will always be remembered for his willingness to help his fellowman, his love and gratitude to his personal Savior. His gift was sharing stories, his winning smile and sense of humor.

Dan loved and served his country as a B-24 pilot in the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II stationed in Okinawa, the Philippines, area islands, Australia, Nagasaki and Tokyo, spending time there before and after the peace was announced. He remained in the Air Force Reserves, Defense Supply Agency in Philadelphia and Charleston, S.C. for 30 years and retired honorably as a Lt. Colonel in 1983. Dan's World War II buddies and their wives would visit and stay with them annually in Spartanburg.

Some of his special business memories were formed with Stevens Aviation, Milliken Breakfast Shows and Rampart College-Freedom School. He enjoyed golf, many good golfing buddies in Spartanburg, Hartsville and Greenville where his office with J. P. Stevens was located, and most of the towns where the textile companies had plants. He especially enjoyed playing at the beach and Grandfather Mountain courses.

Mr. Arrowood's career in textiles allowed him to work and fellowship with friends and colleagues in many towns across the South where there is or have been a Milliken or J. P. Stevens plant. He retired after 40 years combined service with Milliken and J. P. Stevens Co.

He and Mary enjoyed ballroom dancing, dancing outings in upstate South Carolina and Western N.C. They danced at the World War II War Memorial special event attended by Mrs. Elizabeth Dole and loved dancing the swing from the World War II era. Dan and Mary also enjoyed the Lawrence Welk show on Saturday nights, if not out dancing themselves.

In addition to his loving wife of 73 years, he is survived by his son, Dan R. Arrowood, Jr. of Gaffney, S.C. and daughter Mary Susan Boisseau (Kenn) of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Mary Carol Arrowood of Gaffney, S.C., Ashlynn Boisseau Taylor (Jason) Brenn Boisseau Kirton (Kevin), all of Raleigh, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Macon Taylor, Jacob and Collier Kirton, all of Raleigh, N.C.; and wonderful nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Sue Arrowood and Lois Arrowood Taylor and brother, Flake Arrowood, Bruce Arrowood, Harry Arrowood and John Arrowood.
