Janie Bee (Whiteside) Miller

Surrounded by her family, our beloved Grandma Janie passed away on July 1, 2017 at Meadow View Care Center in Emmett, Idaho. She was our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, companion, and Friend to everyone.

Janie was born "on the bench" in Emmett, Gem County, Idaho and raised during the great depression to Claude and Nellie Whiteside. She was the middle daughter, joined by two sisters. The oldest Maxine Hope and Verlaine (Bobbie) Neva, the youngest. Her elementary education was achieved two miles down the road at Central Mesa School where she graduated from the eighth grade as valedictorian. In most cases she walked to school regardless of the weather and then off to high school and graduated in May 1942. However during the intervening years she met a very special soldier and the rest was history. Just was three weeks short of her 18th birthday when they were married in Carson City, Nevada. Because of World War II, Raymond C. Miller (passed in 1988) was around the world fighting for our country. However, sometimes he would be stateside and off she would go to be with him. Along the way Richard Lester (1944) was born and when Ray came from the war in 1945 Michael Jay (1946) was born. They made their home in Emmett and when the boys we old enough, she began working career. Most of her working life ( 50 years) was that of a secretary for, Gratton and Bernard Agency, the Bureau of Reclamation at Black Canyon Dam, Farmers Home Administration, and the last ten years as a clerk in the Gem County Court house. Janie loved traveling and enjoyed many trips around U.S. with Ray and after his passing did a lot more traveling in Europe with her girl friends. As a God given talented artist, see loved to paint and enjoyed both oils and water colors. This talent was inherited from her mother was passed on to her grandson Randy. She was also the great granddaughter of Henry C. Riggs, one of the founding fathers of the State of Idaho. Ada County was named after her great aunt, Ada. Her grandfather, was the first born white child at Fort Boise so they named him Boise Riggs. Unbeknown to her, she was swept in the women's rights revolution in 1970s. being the first woman employed at Black Canyon Dam. Some of the men there did not take kindly to a woman employee, but in time she won them over with plates of cookies and other kindnesses and they soon became devoted friends.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Bobbie. She is survived by her older sister Maxine and her two sons. Richard and his wife Delores. Their daughters Dawn (Mitch Pearce), Darnell (David Haskell), and Danene (Jesse Youngblood) and all of their respective children. Michael and his wife Bonnie. Their sons Randall (Judy) Miller and Ryan (Kristi) Miller and of their respective children which totals 19 great-grandchildren in all.

For those wishing to make a memorial contribution, The American Legion Post 49, Emmett, Idaho would be most appropriate.
