ALONZO JOY, CIVIL WAR VET, DIES
Alonzo Joy passed away at his home on Willow street early Thursday evening. Mr. Joy had been seriously ill for only a short time, although he has been very feeble for some some [sic].
He was born in Berwick, Maine, in 1841. On April 1, 1861, he enlisted in the army and was discharged in August 1861. He enlisted for the second time in the standing army in October, 1861, and served until December, 1866. Mr. Joy was a Mason, being a member of the Corinthian Lodge of Concord. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. He was a member of the Isaac Davis Post No. 138, having been transferred form Concord in 1914.
He always held an office from the time he joined and for the past five years held the office of senior vice commander.
He is survived by three daughters, a son and a brother, who has made his home with Mr. Joy for the past eight years.
Funeral services were held from his late home at 2 o’clock Saturday. The military service was used. Rev. B. Stanley Batstone officiated and Miss Mildred Gallant sang selections. There were nine veterans present at the services. Three of them were from Lawrence, the city where Mr. Joy enlisted. One of the three was Capt. J.N. Jones, 91 years of age, who was the Captain of the Company in which Mr. Joy served during the Civil War.
