D. Elmer Hawbaker, 77, former state senator, 77, of 4175 Ricklyn Drive died Sunday in York Hospital from injuries suffered in a Sept. 24 auto accident.

He was a dairy farmer; state director of Farmers Home Administration under the Reagan administration; a state Senator from 1960 to 1972; a director of the state Bureau of Food and Chemistry; a veteran of World War II; a past president of Franklin County Farmers Association; and member of Franklin County Mercersburg Rotary; Mercersburg American Legion, Mercersburg Sportsmen Association, Mount Pisgah Masonic Lodge, Greencastle; and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mercersburg; where he served as Sunday school superintendent and on the council.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou Carver Hawbaker; a son, David E. of Mercersburg; a daughter, Barbara Goldthwait of Mercersburg; two brothers, J. Alvin of State College and Glenn O. of Pharr, Texas; two sisters, Rhoda B. Hartman of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Lois Wenger of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandsons.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Sellers Funeral Home. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Garden.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Franklin County Unit, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg 17201.
