Wilma, born in Queens, New York City, was a devoted daughter of the late Antonio and Lillian Julio Cerruti.
She was a graduate of Roslindale High School in Roslindale, MA; she received her Bachelor’s Degree from Emmanuel College and her Master’s Degree from Northeastern University, both located in Boston, MA.
She was a lifetime learner who took many classes at Coastal Carolina University. Wilma was curious, loquacious, and had a keen sense of justice led by her faith.
She was a lifelong Catholic and a current member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Charleston, SC. She had been a very active parishioner at St. James Catholic Church in Conway for over 45 years. Among her many activities at St. James were: Ladies Guild President, Children’s Liturgies, Eucharistic Minister, Prison Ministry, English as a Second Language volunteer, and Catholic Charities. She was a longtime Sunday School teacher and with Mrs. Frances Smith. Wilma was a two-time Pee Dee Deanery Catholic Woman of the Year.
Wilma taught in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Exxon Corporation’s School for Overseas Dependents in Libya and Aruba, Cumberland County Public Schools, and Horry County Public Schools. She retired from Waccamaw Elementary, where she was twice named Teacher of the Year. As an educator, she was referred to as “lovingly challenging.” She was a proud member of Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, an international educator’s fraternity. Wilma was an avid traveler and had travelled, taught, and completed mission work on six continents. She was also active in the Horry County League of Woman Voters.
Surviving family and friends, whom she enjoyed and loved, are her daughter and son-in-law Susan Antonia and Nikhil Lucas Kamat of Albuquerque, NM; son Robert Andrew Lucas of Charleston, SC; brother Dario Cerruti of Randolph, MA; nieces and nephews Sheri Cerruti, Michael Cerruti, Helayne Cerruti-Dick, Michelle Cerruti, and their families of Boston, MA; cousin-in-law Rita Julio and her family of Foxboro, MA, and numerous godchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 6, 2017 at The Catholic Church of St. James with Reverend Timothy M. Lijewski officiating.
Inurnment will follow at the church columbarium.
