Put 90 Years of Age and a Resident of the County 60 Yeas
Mrs. Helen Antoinette Gifford, for sixty years a resident In Kalamazoo County, passed away Friday morning, February 18th, at her farm home in Augusta. Helen Akin was born November 26, 1836, In Johnsonville, N. Y., one of a family of fifteen children. Her father, Justis H. Akin. Colonel of Malitia, was the son of Benjamin Akin, the originator of the Akin family, and himself the father of ten children. She graduated from Fort Edward Institute at an early age and was joined in marriage in her twentieth year to Henry C. Gifford, of South Easton, N. Y. They moved to Michigan In the year 1867, and were the parents of two sons, Clayton E., for many years employed as operator and clerk In the Michigan Central Depot at Battle Creek, and Arlon H., now a practicing physician in Kalamazoo. Six grandchildren survive her. Margaret Wenzel, of Kalamazoo; Robert, Florence, Virginia, Mary and Clayton, Arlon, children respectively of Arlon and Clayton Gifford, and one great grand-daughter, Juanita Jean, daughter of Robert and Doris Gifford. Mrs. Gifford possessed a keen intellect and a remarkable memory, for a woman of her advanced age. She was able to relate many interesting stories of her girlhood days. Her greatest interest centered in her home life, where she was actively engaged in her household duties until the present winter. It may be truly said that she so lived that when her summons came she met it unafraid. The funeral services, under the direction of Charles Garrett, were conducted from the home, Sunday, February 20th, a t 2:30. Rev. Amos Bogart officiating.
