James Gibson Swisher was born in the Territory of the U. S., South of the River Ohio, or as it was more commonly known, the Southwest Territory. On 01 Jun 1796, when James was not quite 19 months old, those lands became part of the new State of Tennessee.

The actual location of his birth was in Knox County which had only recently been created (on 11 Jun 1792), from parts of Greene and Hawkins counties. Knox County was one of the few counties created when the state was still known as the Southwest Territory.

His parents were Henry Swisher (1772-Aft 1845) and Annie Gibson (1768-Aft 1840).

On 13 Sep 1815, he was married to Elizabeth Boyd (1798-1875) in Williamson County, Tennessee. Elizabeth's parents were James Boyd (1768-1821) and Nancy Gentry (1764-1828).

James and his family moved to Texas in 1833. He was one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and he was a veteran of the Siege of Bexar.

Swisher County, Texas is named for him.

The following is from the SWISHER, JAMES GIBSON page on the Texas State Historical Association's website. It was provided by Find A Grave contributor, Swisher descendant, and currently one of the leading Swisher researchers, Angela Jones Harlan, who has Capt. Swisher's service records from the War of 1812.

In the War of 1812 he served as a private in Capt. David Mason's company of Tennessee militia from August 18, 1813, to May 21, 1814, and in Capt. John Donelson's company of United States Mounted Rangers from September 2, 1814, to September 1, 1815. Swisher participated in the two battles of New Orleans.
