OBITUARY - George Baker Jewett

Salem, Mass., June 9. – Rev. George Baker Jewett, D.D., died to-day, aged sixty. He was graduated from Amherst College in 1837, and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1842. While riding with his wife and son in 1856 he approached an unguarded railroad crossing just as a train was approaching. Mr. Jewett’s horse crossed by immediately after became unmanageable and backed directly into the train. The entire party was thrown beneath the train, and Mr. Jewett never fully recovered his health and had been an invalid a long time previous to his death. His injury resulted in the invention by himself of Jewett’s artificial leg.

CLERGYMAN KNOCKED DOWN

Rev. George B. Jewett of Salem was knocked down by a runaway horse yesterday afternoon on the corner of Essex and Washington Streets, run over, and cut and bruised on the back and head. His injuries, although painful, are not considered serious. He was taken to his home in Barton square.

*NOTE - His death came only 21 days after this accident.
