Henry Clark Riner was born in Greensboro, Preble County Ohio, on October 13th, 1833. He was born one of ten children. When he was young Riner learned the millwright trade, but worked at many odd jobs. On February 2nd of 1864 he enlisted in the 31st Ohio Infantry, company E, which was part of the 14th Army Corps. He participated in the famed Sherman's March across Georgia and the Carolinas. He was discharged on July 20th, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. In 1866 he and his brother Harvey moved to Sevastopol Indiana and bought and ran a sawmill. Later Henry went into the grocery business. One January 20th, 1870 Riner married Lizzie Leiter. Sadly, she died shortly after on June 2nd, 1871. One July 21st, 1873 he remarried Nancy Leiter, Lizzie's sister. To this union seven children were born. Riner was a member of the M.E. Church. On December 23rd, 1908, 75 year old Henry Riner and one of his sons were chopping wood when the elder collapsed and died. The funeral services were held at Sevastopol and conducted by Reverend J.P. Green.
