Lawton H. Wilkes was a Sergeant in the Army during World War II. Lawton resided in Fulton County, Georgia before enlisting on November 16, 1942. At the time of enlistment, Lawton was 29 years old, had 4 years of high school education and was married. Two years later, Lawton was captured by Nazi Germany, and was sent to Stalag 17B near Krems, Austria where 3,219 other American POWs were held. Lawton's capture was first reported to the International Committee of the Red Cross on January 5, 1944, and the last report was made on September 15, 1944. Based on these two reports, Lawton was imprisoned for at least 254 days (~9 months). The average duration of imprisonment was 363 days.

Ultimately, Lawton was executed or shot while attempting escape.
