Patrick Ellis “Pat” Lafferty, 81, of Pearland TX passed away Sunday June 25, 2017 following a brief illness.
Pat was born in Philadelphia on March 19, 1936. He grew up in Castroville TX, and graduated from St. Louis Catholic School. In 1954 he was admitted into the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1956 he received a medical discharge after he contracted polio. In 1957 he entered the University of Houston, graduating with degrees in physics and math. While there, he served in student government. Pat then enrolled in the U of H Physics post -graduate program and was elected to the Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society. In 1963 he was hired by the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, beginning a 27 year career with NASA. During the Apollo years, Pat managed a team that operated the Solar Particle Alert Network providing warnings when solar radiation could be hazardous to Apollo astronauts on the moon. Subsequently
he was a Science Experiment Manager, advising experimenters on how to implement scientific investigations. After joining the Space Shuttle Program and the Life Sciences Project Division, he managed an in flight experiment program to study astronaut cardiovascular deconditioning. His last two years with NASA he was responsible for managing activities related to flight experiment projects. After retiring, Pat wrote articles published in financial magazines, and an economics column for the Motley Fool internet financial service.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Charlotte Lafferty; sister Kathy Lafferty; and son-in-law Royce Bunnell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlotte Lafferty; son Patrick Lafferty Jr.;daughter Elizabeth Graf and husband Jon; daughter Mary Bunnell; niece Michelle Lafferty; and grandchildren Christopher Bunnell, Kelsey Bunnell, Nicholas Graf, and Tyler Graf.
