Salina, Utah - Our kind and beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, LeRoy Gates Shields, age 75, of Salina, passed away June 23, 2017 in Richfield after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born June 4, 1942 in Salina, a son of Ellaroy and Hilda Gates Shields.

He graduated from North Sevier High School, Class of 1960. He then attended SUSC in Cedar City for four years. After he graduated from SUSC he went to Logan and attended USU for four years, majoring in History.

He joined the United States Navy and served his country during the Viet Nam Conflict.
LeRoy married Hayda Marie McKinlay, February 22, 1975 in Salina. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple, February 24, 2001.

LeRoy was an active member of the LDS Church. He enjoyed teaching and was a teacher in just about every organization in the church. He was currently a High Priest in the Salina Creek Ward.
He worked for United Parcel Services and retired after 25 years of delivering parcels in the area.
LeRoy loved putting together model air planes. He enjoyed hunting and riding motorcycles.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Hayda, of Salina; children: Landon and Nicole Shields, John P. and Keri Ann Shields, all of Salina; Jenny Lee Bayles of Salt Lake City; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Evelyn Sheilds of Sandy.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law: Norma and Kay Nielson; his brother and sister-in-law: Howard and Wynonna Shields; and his brother: Jerold Gates Shields.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 12 Noon in the Salina Creek LDS Ward Chapel, 85 South 100 East in Salina. Friends may call for viewing at the Springer Turner Funeral Home, 150 East Main Street in Salina, Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 prior to the services.

Burial with military honors accorded by the Salina American Legion Post #36 and the Utah Honor Guard will be in the Eastside Cemetery under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.
