*****************************

Jules Rene Blanchet attended school at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, LA. At the age of nineteen he served in the Confederate Army. Because of a heart murmur he was appointed as an aide in the Medical Corp to Dr. Sabin Martin, under General Mouton. He often reminisced about his experience at the Battle of Mansfield -- when he was ordered to "Bring a canteen of fresh water for the General," and upon his return with the water the General drooped his head and expired.

During the same battle Jules was taken prisoner, having been surrendered by General E. R. Smith C.S.A., May 26, 1865 to General E. R. S. Canby and paroled at Natchitoches, La., June 6, 1865. This roll was signed by Alcibade DeBlanc, Col. Com., R. C. Div. West La.

Shortly after his marriage to Henriette Hebert in 1871, Jules opened a general store on the S.W. corner of St. Peter and Iberia Streets next to their home located on St. Peter Street. This he operated for only a short period of time, selling to Alfred and John Hebert who resold to Norbert Blanchet. Norbert Blanchet demolished the building and built two rent houses. These in turn were inherited by Dr. Homer Dupuy who sold the lots to the Castilles and Heberts.
