Edward Jr. was the second son of Edward Lewis Sr. (1721-1792) and his wife Sarah (Morris) Lewis. He was the second of nine children of his parents. His parents are buried in this same Basking Ridge cemetery, but their tombstones have gone missing over time. Edward Jr.'s mother Sarah (Morris) Lewis was directly descendant of two notable founding fathers of New Jersey: Jasper Crane (1602-1680) (FAG ID#152842291) through Sarah's paternal grandmother Sarah Rose (Crane) Morris; and New Jersey founding father Edward Riggs III (1650-1696) (FAG ID#32243177) through Sarah's mother Hannah Mary (Riggs) Morris.
Edward Lewis, Jr., notably served as Commissary General during the Revolutionary War, married Nancy Crowell on December 9, 1781 in Somerset County, New Jersey. The marriage produced a number of children, many of which lived to maturity.
