Steven Darnell Lane Sr., age 57, of Bridgeton, New Jersey departed this natural life on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 while at home under hospice care. Steve was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer less than two months before he entered the presence of the Lord.

Steve was born on November 4, 1959 in Bridgeton to Willie Rufus Lane and Emma Jean Harris. He attended elementary schools in Bridgeton and graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1978. He met the love of his life, Arletha “Lee” Wright when they were both sophomores at BHS. As a child growing up in Bridgeton, Steve excelled in academics and sports. He played baseball from Little League to Babe Ruth and competed on South Jersey championship teams for Bridgeton High School and also won championships in the Bridgeton Invitational baseball tournaments. His prowess as a catcher earned him All Conference honors all throughout his years as a varsity player on the Bridgeton High School baseball team. He later spent a few seasons playing semi-professional baseball in North Jersey.

In addition to baseball, Steve was also a standout athlete on the football field. During his years at BHS, Steve was often named Player of the Week on the offensive and defensive lines. He was named All Area and All Group 4 as a sophomore, junior and senior.

Following graduation from BHS, Steve played on the defensive line at Montclair State College and was honored to have played side-by-side with the late NFL All-Star Sam Mills when they both were student athletes at Montclair. Steve graduated from Montclair State College in 1983 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Political Science. He pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity while at Montclair.

Steve and Arletha were married on January 19, 1985 at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Bridgeton. From that union they were blessed with one son, Steven D. Lane Jr. The Lane family lived in Monmouth County for nearly 10 years before relocating back to their home town. Steve and Lee celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in 2015 by renewing their wedding vows.

Steve accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a child and was baptized at Union Baptist Temple when he was a teenager. He rededicated his life to Christ as an adult. He was a member of Life In Christ Ministries International and attended adult Life Classes and the Men’s Bible Fellowship ministry.

His first job as a growing young boy was working along side his father in the family office and restaurant cleaning business. As an adult, he was employed primarily as a Safety Officer for a number of companies including Mazza and Sons, Guardian Environmental, Haztech Environmental, and the Army Corps of Engineers.

Steve was passionate about many things in life, most importantly his faith, his family and his Dallas Cowboys. Although he loved watching Emmitt Smith, Reggie White and Tom Brady, his favorite athlete of all time was his son Stevie whom he coached baseball in Little League and Babe Ruth, and football from the Gems to high school. One of Steve’s proudest moments was watching his son being honored as an All-State football player wearing the same #75 that he wore in high school 30 years earlier.

In addition, Steve loved, loved, loved to cook and was quite good at it. He also enjoyed traveling and engaging in spirited discussions on Facebook.

Steve leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife and son, Arletha Wright Lane and Steven D. Lane Jr.; parents, Willie Rufus Lane and Emma Jean Harris; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Deana and Dr. James Treadwell Sr. and Jeri and Donnel Treadwell Sr.; his brother and sister-in-law, William Sr. and Tangela Lane; his stepmother Anne Lane; his father-in-law, Floyd Wright Sr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and a huge following of Facebook friends.

He was predeceased by his 17-year-old dog, Troy Aikman Lane.
