On 16 April 1864, Confederate General E. Kirby Smith assigned King to duty as a brigadier general, to date from 8 April 1864. He fled to Mexico after the War, but returned to Texas. He moved to Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, (circa 1875); he served as mayor of that town, a state representative (1878-81), and adjutant general of Texas, 1881-91.
