Jazz Pianist, Composer. She was a very influential musician who defied classification while keeping to her hard-bop tradition roots. She studied music at Cass Technical High School in Detroit and then at the Jazz Development Workshop under Marcus Belgrave. She earned a degree in jazz studies from Howard University and then an M.A. in ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1982. After graduating, she moved to New York City and toured with former Supremes group member Mary Wilson. In the mid-1980s she became a charter member of Brooklyn’s M-Base movement, which was a loose group of talented young musicians that included Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman and Greg Osby. She later became the keyboardist in the funk group Steve Coleman and Five Elements. She made her debut album in Germany in 1985, which was called "The Printmakers", and featured Anthony Cox and Andrew Cyrille. She would go on to release several more albums during her career. In 1995, she was the first recipient of Soul Train's Lady of Soul Award for jazz album of the year for her album “Twenty-One" featuring Ron Carter. She also recorded with legendary jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman in 1996. Her 2010 album “Flying Toward the Sound", was rated the ninth best of the year in the Village Voice’s Jazz Critic’s Poll and her 2013 album “Grand River Crossings: Motown & Motor City Inspirations" was a tribute to her hometown of Detroit. In recent years, she was director of Jazz Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Before her passing, she toured Europe with legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner.
