Lowell Payne, 93, of Flora, formerly of Sailor Springs, died Aug. 15, 2004, at Flora Pavilion Nursing Center.

Mr. Payne was born Feb. 2, 1911, in Sailor Springs, the son of Henry and Arvella Leonard Payne.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, ten brothers, and one twin sister.

Funeral services were held at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home with burial in Smith Cemetery near Sailor Springs.



ACTIVITY DURING WWII
WITH 6 MONTHS, 5 DAYS OF PRIOR SERVICE IN 1940, RECALLED TO ACTIVE DUTY AGAIN ON AUGUST 13, 1942 AT EAST SAINT LOUIS, ILLINOIS, AS A DRAFTEE. ASSIGNED TO BATTERY D, 54TH ANTI-AIRCRAFT TRAINING BATTALION, ANTI-AIRCRAFT REPLACEMENT TRAINING CENTER, AT CAMP CALLAN, CALIFORNIA. HONORABLY DISCHARGED AS A PRIVATE ON OCTOBER 30, 1942 (JUST SHORT OF HIS 32ND BIRTHDAY) AT SAME STATION. EARNED THE AMERICAN DEFENSE SERVICE MEDAL AND THE WWII VICTORY MEDAL FOR SERVICE DURING THE PERIODS OF ELIGIBILITY.
