William Mace Thurman was born Jan 1850 in Maury Co, Tenn (due south of Nashville). He was 7th of 11 children. His father is William R Thurman and mother is Nancy J Sanford. By 1860 the family moved farther south to Giles Co and stayed there for the next 40 years.
The 1870 census shows William, age 20 had a first wife named Sarah E, age 18 in Buford Station Giles, Co, Tenn. No children are known from this marriage, but Sarah died in TX in 1896.
William worked at various jobs over the years: farmer, marble polisher, peddler.
In 1897 William, 47, married a much younger Mae Stair, age 29, in Hunt Co, TX. William M probably moved to Texas when some of his other kinfolk did. But in 1900 William is back in Giles Co, Tenn where is 2nd child Lois was born in 1900. Possibly the families moved back and forth between Tenn and Texas. In 1910 William is back to Hunt Co TX. In The Commerce Journal there are several references to W.M. Thurman as a cotton farmer. Also are references to Jim Thurmand and Deputy George Thurman, both brothers. Also there are several Thurman's and Stair's listed in Hunt Co in 1910. William and Mae had 5 children but only 2 survived to adulthood: Lois, born 1900 and Ray Van, born 1904 in Texas. These young children are buried at Humboldt Cem, Neylandville, Hunt, TX with first wife Sarah.
He has a nephew, George (son of Will's brother James Martin), who buried him in Neylandville, Hunt Co. in 1917.
