Mrs. Burkard was born July 23, 1924 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, earned a BA degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin- Madison, in 1946. She taught high school English in Davenport, Iowa before moving to Chicago in search of work in the publishing field. Her skills as a business journalist were soon put to good use in the retailing furniture industry.
After her marriage on October 9, 1954 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Mr. Burkard, a fellow editor in the medical field, Mrs. Burkard changed her career path to that of homemaker and raising the couple's three daughters. Over the years, the growing family moved from apartments in Chicago and Evanston, eventually landing in Wilmette in 1958, where they lived in the same house for 49 years.
Mrs. Burkard enjoyed traveling with her husband, playing the piano, reading mystery novels, and tending many varieties of her favorite flower, the orchid.
Visitation Tuesday, February 27, 2007, 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. Skokie, Illinois. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at St. Francis Xavier Church, 9th and Linden, Wilmette, Illinois. Interment will take place in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois.
