Genealogical Goldmine, Vol. 40 - No. 1, Spring 2007; Paradise Genealogical Society,
Paradise, Butte, CA: "Butte Pioneer, Eva Bouton, Dies in Sleep. Nov 8, 1872 -- Jan
26, 1961. Mrs. Eva Benner Bouton, 88-year-old Butte County pioneer resident, died in
her sleep yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Dunlap of
Cloverdale.

"Mrs. Bouton, whose grandfather crossed the plains in a wagon train in 1852, was
born Nov. 8, 1973 [sic], at Table Mountain. She was the daughter of John and Emily
Pratt Benner. Her maternal grandfather, Dr. Willard Pratt, was wagon train physician
when the caravan came west. In 1858 he settled on a ranch four miles north of Chico,
before the city was laid out.

"Mrs. Bouton was born on a ranch at Table Mountain near Oroville. It was owned by
her paternal grandfather, Jacob Benner, pioneer cattleman. When Mrs. Bouton was nine
years of age, her parents died and she came to live in Chico at the home of her
grandmother, Mrs. Pratt, and her aunt, Mrs. A.J. Landis.

"She attended Chico schools and was a member of the Chico Normal School class of
1892, the first class to graduate from the school. Later she attended annual Chico
State College homecomings, where she and her sister, Mrs. George Springer, and Mrs.
F. W. Thompson were special guests of honor as the three surviving members of the
class of '92.

"After Chico Normal graduation, Mrs. Bouton taught school. On June 12, 1901, in
Olinda, she was married to the late Jay L. Bouton. The couple lived in Manton until
1904, when they moved to Chico, residing at 1326 Mulberry St.

"After her husband's death, she continued to live in the Mulberry Street home until
it was destroyed by fire. Since that time she has lived with her daughter at
Cloverdale, spending several months each year with a cousin, Mrs. Edward Gage of
Chico.

"Mrs. Bouton, one of the oldest members of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church,
was a member of Group Six of the Presbyterian Women's Association. She also was one
of the first members of the Chico Art Club. Her aunt, Mrs. Landis, was one of the
founders of the club.

"Survivors include, besides Mrs. Dunlap and Mrs. Springer, a second daughter, Mrs.
Elgin Shaw of Magalia; a grandson, Maj. Lloyd Dunlap Jr., in charge of the Air Force
ROTC program at the University of Arkansas, and two great-grandchildren, Jeffr4ey
and Julie Ann Dunlap. A brother, Will Benner, and two sisters, Mrs. Jim Dooley and
Mrs. William Rickard, preceded her in death.

"Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Case-Timmons-Van Hook Funeral Chapel.
Rev. Daniel Wessler, pastor of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church will
officiate. Cremation will follow at Sierra View Memorial Park at Marysville."
