Cancer kills hospital crusader Else Zion, 70
ELSA HEISTER ZION, wife of Daily News columnist Sidney Zion and a longtime fighter for laws regulating hospital care, was buried yesterday at the Sanctuary of Abraham and Sarah in Paramus, NJ. Zion died Thursday from complications of breast cancer. She was 70.
She was buried on the 21st anniversary of the burial of daughter Libby in the same cemetery. Libby Zion was 18 when she died in New York Hospital on March 5, 1984, after being admitted with a high fever. After her death, Elsa and Sidney Zion led a fight for better hospital conditions. In 1989, as a result of their campaign, New York State adopted strong regulations limiting work loads of interns and residents and increasing supervision by senior doctors.
Elsa Zion was a deputy director of the city's Department of Aging at her death. She was previously an assistant to former City Council President Andrew Stein and president of Transworld Feature Syndicate.
Elsa Heister was born in Winthrop, NY, on February 24, 1935. She earned an undergraduate degree from Bard College and a master's in library science from the University of Chicago.
Besides her husband of 42 years, she was survived by two sons, Adam and Jed; two sisters; two brothers; and two grandchildren.
