Robert is a son of Alfred Stevens Jr. (1840-1874) and Ann MacFarlane Smith (1840-1873) - the fifth of their six children. Both of their parents died young, the mother dying with the sixth child at his birth, the father a year later. After their parents death, their grandfather contacted a missionary, Archie McFarland, asked him to locate the children, and make arrangements for their voyage to America. The five remaining children (Christina, Isabell, Alfred, William James, and Robert) arrived at their grandparents' home in Slaterville, Utah on July 3, 1875.

Robert married Roselee Eschler on September 11, 1895 in Logan, Utah. They became parents to five children: Emma Louisa, Dorothy, Robert Lafayette, Velma, and Alfred Golden. Only Dorothy lived to adulthood.
