James "Jim" Edward Vernon, 86, of Mertens, Texas, passed away on June 23, 2017. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Jim was born in Denver Colorado, to the late Edward Daniel and Gertrude "Jerry" Vernon. At age nine, Jim and his family moved to Lubbock, Texas. Graduating from Lubbock High School in 1950, he enjoyed participating in Track and the FFA. Jim went on to join the United States Air Force, finishing his tour of duty in 1954. Jim worked toward his Bachelors of Science in Building Trades, and upon his honorable discharge, attended the LeTourneau Technical Institute in Longview, Texas. Not only did Jim graduate from the Institute, but later became an instructor in Building Trades until 1958.

After finishing his career in teaching at the LeTourneau Technical Institute, Jim continued work in the field, later accepting a position working for HUD (Housing and Urban Development) from 1960 to 1985, where he worked throughout Texas. During this time, Jim also took part in missions with the Baptist church that he attended, traveling to Brazil and Mexico to work with the local representatives to rebuild homes and establish wells for water for the impoverished community.

Jim is an active member of the Trail to the Cross Cowboy Church in Hillsboro. Following his career at HUD, Jim continued to engineer, design, and build in the local Dallas, Fort Worth, and Hillsboro area. Often helping those in need when opportunities presented themselves, Jim eventually built a farm in Mertens, Texas, where he would live the remainder of his life. Until his death, Jim continued to build homes, raise horses, riding them until he was no longer able.

He was preceded in death by his son, James "Roger" Vernon; and his brother, Frederic Allen Vernon.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Kaye Vernon; four children; three step-children; and over 20 grandchildren. M5
