PIONEER PASSES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

W. H. Markham, pioneer of the Newville section, and for years a prominent figure in the public affairs of Glenn county, passed away at his home in Willows last Monday noon after weeks of suffering, following a paralytic stroke.
William H. Markham was born near Sacramento August 8, 1859, but came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Markham, when still a youth, to the ranch three miles north of Newville where he grew to manhood. He followed farming in that section and was also identified with mercantile pursuits in Paskenta and Newville while a young man. He married Miss Annie Burrows of Newville, who survives him as also does three children – Mrs. Ed. Ball of Willows, Ray Markham, serving in the U. S. army at San Pedro, and Mrs. Howard Sparrow of San Rafael.
Mr. Markham served two terms as deputy assessor under P. O. Eibe and was later elected County Assessor for three consecutive terms. He entered the campaign for the same office this year, but ill health forced him to withdraw.
Mr. Markham was a member of the Masonic lodge at Newville and the Odd Fellows lodge at Willows.
The funeral will be held from the family residence in Willows tomorrow (Thursday) at 10 o'clock. The Masons will then take charge of the remains and perform the rites of the order at the grave, interment to take place at the Newville cemetery. - Transcribed by E.
