Jazz Musician. Born Margaret Knechtges, she was a pioneering bandleader of one of the earliest all-female jazz bands "The Melody Girls" and enjoyed a career that spanned more than eight decades. An accomplished piano player, Gilbert developed a love for jazz at an early age and learned to play the saxophone. During her career, her bands would share the billing with such music legends as Benny Goodman and Louis Prima. During the 1970s, she formed "The Dixie Belles" and continued to perform with them into her 90s. She died of complications from hip surgery
