Mattie Woods of Harrisburg, PA departed this life on June 19, 2017 at the PinnacleHealth Community General Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg after a valiant battle with multiple sclerosis. Born January 22, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. John W Woods, Sr. of Preston, MD. She was 70 years old.
A graduate of Lockerman High School in Denton, MD, Mattie received her BS degree in Library Science from Virginia State College in VA and her MSLS degree from Clarion State University in PA. She was Head Librarian at John Harris High School, the Harrisburg School District in Pennsylvania from 1970-1972. Beginning 1972 she served as Circulation Services Librarian at Harrisburg Area Community College, retiring after 32 years as professor of Information Science and French.
Her community and professional affiliations were various and included membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Harrisburg Alumnae Chapter, the NAACP, the Pennsylvania Library Association.
Mattie was an avid reader. With her twin sister Hattie, she enjoyed traveling, attending theatrical performances, listening to music, and engaging in creative activities.
Celebration of Life for Mattie will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 24 in the Chapel at Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover, DE. Interment will be at Spring Grove Cemetery in Denton, MD. Family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service.
