Eleanor Bennett Godfrey Mitchell of Bluefield, WV departed this earthly life to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 18, 2011. Born in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the ninth child born to the late Fannie Linthicum and Rev. George L. Bennett. Names aftr her mother and the doctor who delivered her, Eleanor was baptized at an early age and was of the baptist faith. She was educated in Raleigh County and later attended Bluefield State College. She was a retired licensed practical nurse for the Mercer County Health Center.
In Addition to her parents and foster parents William Wright and Georgie Wright Matthews, Eleanor was preceded in death by her first husband, Monroe Godfrey on November 17, 1961; daughter Cynthia Yvonne Godfrey on October 29, 1999; son, David Monroe Godfrey on December 11, 2008; one grandchild Gregory Lee Murray; eight sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence Andrew Mitchell of the home; children, Barbara Godfrey Lewis, Reverend Aaron Thomas Godfrey, Patricia Godfrey (William) Gomillian, Georgie Godfrey (Bennie) Price, Andrea Eleanor Mitchell, Clarice Mitchell Vassar, D'Borah Mitchell (Nicholas) Parries; sisters, Willie Bennett Duren of California and Lucy Bennett Smoot, WV; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Route 20 (Littlesburg Road), Bluewell with her son, the Reverend Aaron Thomas Godfrey officiating. Interment will follow. Richardson Funeral Home of Bluefield is in charge of arrangements.
