Janet Barbara Walker was born November 3 1868, eldest of 7 children of Thomas Gregg Walker and Charlotte Urquhart. She married Nicholas Groshaw (1955 Belmont Elgin County) August 10 1886, at age 18 and had three sons. Nicholas died in 1896 making her a widow at age 25, so she completed her nurses training and accepted a post as matron at Victoria Home for Incurables (Parkwood) London. She had been there 9 years when she received word that son William was reported missing in action, later presumed dead April 1915. In March 1916 son James enlisted and on June 3 1916 son Thomas enlisted. Janet applied for a leave of absence and enlisted as a Nursing Sister in the Canadian Army Medical Corp November 27 1916 WWI. Before being discharged June 7 1919, she was a matron at Red Cross Hospital, supervisor of 350 bed workhouse and Superintendent Cliveden Hospital. During heavy bombardment was transferred to Etaples France. During her service in France she suffered shell shock and was sent to England to recuperate. Janet died March 31 1960, son James is buried beside his mother in Plot 2, and Thomas is buried on her other side in Plot 4. Upon her enlistment they became Canada's only woman to serve at the same time as her three sons. Nicholas parents moved to Maryborough Township with 5 children in 1869. Nicholas was married to Mary Holborn before he married Janet August 10 1886.
