Author. A writer of twelve non-fiction books, he is best known for his 1957 account of the 1900 Galveston, Texas hurricane titled "A Weekend in September." He focused on biographical and historical accounts of the 20th century's most spectacular events including the quest to reach the North Pole in the work "Race for the Pile" and the Spanish-American War in "Fate of the Maine".
