Jean Carolyn Owens, a resident of Miami, Oklahoma passed away June 18, 2017. She was born in Kansas City, Mo on April 11th, 1936 to Roy and Helen (Watson) Warsop. They soon moved to Gore, Oklahoma where they farmed. Jean graduated from Gore High School and was the Salutatorian of her graduating class.

She married the love of her life, Paul Owens on June 28th, 1955 at the First Assembly of God in Miami and they were married for fifty-eight years. They were members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Miami.

Jean worked at several businesses in Miami, including, Miami Sewing factory, Commerce Sales, and in the Financial Aid office at NEO A&M College. It was while she was working at NEO, that she decided to go to college herself and become a teacher as she loved being around and teaching children. She obtained an Associates of Art degree at NEO in 1975 then went on to Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Ks and obtained a BSED degree in 1977. After receiving her BS degree, she taught at Picher Grade School 1977-78, then to Miami Public Schools in 1978. While teaching in the day time, she went back to school at night and received a Master of Science in Education in 1980. As she taught children, she realized that she loved teaching children to read. So, she went back to night school at Pittsburg and received a Doctorate Specialist in Education (Reading), in 1986. She focused on grade school children to teach them to read. She spent her workdays, traveling to all grade schools in Miami. Jean spent her evenings tutoring children who needed extra help in her home. Jean retired from Miami Public Schools after well over twenty-five years. After retirement, she continued teaching at Mount Olive Lutheran School for several years. She was also active in the March of Dimes and the Retired Teachers Association. She pursued her hobby of researching her ancestry at the Miami Public Library. Jean had loving and dear Christian friends and loved her church, she always enjoyed attending her weekly Bible Bells meetings.

Jean was preceded in passing by her husband Paul Owens, father, Roy Warsop, mother, Helen Warsop, father-in-law Olen Owens, mother-in-law Cherry Owens, brother Jack Warsop, brother-in-law’s Bill Owens and Ronnie Miller, and daughter-in-law Lisa Owens.
