Lawrence E. Hartley, 83, of Morrill, died early Sunday morning, May 21, 2006, at his home.

He was born February 21, 1923, five miles south of Horton in Atchison County, KS, one of seven children of William “Rosco” and Lillie Stansberger Hartley and was a lifelong resident of this area. He grew up near there where he attended schools. Lawrence served with US Army during WWII, serving in Germany as a truck driver, discharged at the rank of Tech 5 in 1945. He worked as a carpenter for many years in several locations including Topeka, Holton, and Atchison. Even after retirement, he did construction work. Lawrence also worked at the salvage scrap yard, northeast of Morrill, for his daughter and son-in-law Phil and Sharon Bestwick, until he was sick and couldn’t return.

Lawrence and Helen Halstead were married September 10, 1947 at Hiawatha. She survives of the home.

Mr. Hartley was a member of the American Legion of Fairview; the VFW of Sabetha.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter Sandra; a granddaughter Melinda Burton; a brother William Hartley; three sisters Mary Gray and twins Hallie McCoy and Helen Kramp.

Celebration of life services are planned 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Blaine Shaffer will officiate, to be assisted by David Manning. Interment will follow at the Hamlin Cemetery with military services a courtesy of 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas National Guard, Hiawatha.
