A man who murdered his elderly parents in a Hemet senior mobile home park was sentenced to life with no possibility of parole Friday, Jan. 15.
David Michael Underwood, a 44-year-old Yorba Linda man, pleaded guilty Dec. 3 to two counts of murder, each with two enhancements relating to the use of a firearm to commit the crime, court records show.
He was eligible for the death penalty, but Underwood accepted a deal to plead guilty to all counts and enhancements in exchange for life in prison without parole, said John Hall, spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office.
Gunshots were heard coming from the victims’ home in the West Hemet retirement community in the morning of Aug. 7, 2014. In the home, officers found the bodies of the victims, 71-year-old Michael Underwood and 68-year-old Laura Underwood, police said at the time.
They had been shot several times, Hall said. The killer was arrested that evening in Anaheim.
The case never made it to trial – or even to a preliminary hearing – before Underwood entered his plea, so few details were ever revealed on case.
