Significant difficulties exist in correctly sorting out the Long Island, New York, Morristown, New Jersey and Ohio families which trace back to LUDLAM or LUDLOW immigrant fathers. Portions of the Ludlam family later embraced the surname of Ludlow causing confusion. This entry is to be for an early c1647-1653 immigrant, William2 Ludlam of Southampton, Long Island, NY formerly of Matlock (Mattoch), Derbyshire, England, the husband of Clemence, who predeceased Wm2's emigration. Among others, it is the excellent 1943 article entitled "William Ludlam of Southampton, Long Island" authored by Conklin Mann, Esq. of New York City, as edited by Clarence Almon Torrey, Dorchester, Mass [footnote in TAG article] which informs us. Please cite to and refer to periodical authority: The American Genealogist (TAG), July 1943, No. 77, v.20, p. 8-30 and Addenda, p. 238-9. Among other sources, Author Mann cites back to an item published: Notes and Queries, New York Gen & Biog. Rec., Vol. 15, p93, April 1884 which in turn details affidavits made back about 1701.

Son of William1 Ludlam and wife Mary _____ Ludlam, Wm2's birthdate seems to vary, say 1600-1605. Source ________ . Author Mann informs us that this Wm2 Ludlam signed his last will, 27 Apr 1665, proved June 1665. The estate was closed Oct 1666 and his son, Henry was released as executor. Please link together issue of this Derbyshire line from widower, Wm2 Ludlam and wife Clement "Clemence" Fordham which includes 8 Ludlam children:

1. William3 Ludlam - born c1628- aka William of Huntington, Long Island, NY; buried "at Huntington" after June 1667. Eldest son of Wm2 as per 1701 affidavits, NYGB Rec.(1884 Vol _ p93).

2. Grace Ludlam - born "say 1630. She came from England to Boston with her brother, William on the "Triall" in July 1648." [Mann]. Her unnamed child, ___, inherited in Wm2's Will. With thanks to kind findagraver, Sutherland McColley (#49340972) for informing us that reliable authority on Wm2 Ludlam's son-in-law, Caleb Carwithy of Southampton and Huntington, Long Island exists: author, Seversmith, Herbert Furman. "Colonial Families of Long Island, New York, and Connecticut," 1953, Vol. 4, pp. 1895-1898. So Caleb Carwithy (Carwith, Carwithen, Corwith, MacKarwithy) was Grace's "mariner" husband, named as son of David Carwithy, d. testate, 30 Aug 1665, by author, Howell (1887), Early His. Southampton.

It was Seversmith who praised Dr. Walter D. Ludlum, Sr.'s article, The American Genealogist (TAG), Vol 29, No. 2, c1953, entitled "William Ludlam of Southampton- Some New Information" p90-98. It is Dr. Ludlum who declares Wm1, as died 1659/60 and his wife Mary ____ Ludlam died 1645 [p92. TAG article, 1953 cited elsewhere], along with burial entries as "sepult." [p94-95, TAG].

Also Howell's (1887) Early His Southampton p226/n235, archive.org, names Grace Ludlam Carwithy's daughter as Martha Carwithy, and alludes to "perhaps other" children.

3. Henry Ludlam - 1638/1691 - Find A Grave Memorial# 171149929. When viewing Matlock baptismal entries on the CD which I purchased (2017) from Val Neal, Matlock, one reads, in part: "Ludlam Henry Ludlam William 13/04/1638" which declares that Henry was baptized April 13, 1638. A Henry Ludlam, son of a Wm Ludlam, was christened 15 April 1638. ["England, Derbyshire, Church of England Parish Registers, 1537-1918," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBF4-V24 : 29 December 2014), William Ludlam in entry for Henry Ludlam, 15 Apr 1638; citing Christening, Matlock, Matlock, Derbyshire, England, Record Office, Matlock; FHL microfilm 2,081,963]

4. Frances Ludlam [King] - 1638/1692 - Find A Grave Memorial# 62370165. When viewing Matlock baptismal entries on the CD, one reads in part: "Ludlam Frances Ludlam William 01/02/1641 " which provides primary source that Frances Ludlam was baptized Feb. 1, 1641. A Frances Ludlam, daughter of a Wm Ludlam was christened __ Feb 1640 [no day given]. ["England, Derbyshire, Church of England Parish Registers, 1537-1918," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBF4-VRL : 29 December 2014), William Ludlam in entry for Frances Ludlam, Feb 1640; citing Christening, Matlock, Matlock, Derbyshire, England, Record Office, Matlock; FHL microfilm 2,081,963.]

5. Mary Ludlam [Scudder] - 1639/1691 - Find A Grave Memorial# 103170253, Old Burying Hill Cemetery, Huntington, Long Island. Although Mary's 1639 baptism does not seem to appear on the church's CD (for reasons unclear), do see Dr. Walter D. Ludlum Sr's TAG article, p92 and p94 where her baptism is listed.

6. Anthony Ludlam (Clemence died 1646)- his 1651 birth yr. is disputed - or 1631/1681/82 - Find A Grave Memorial# 31229455 (Mecox with tombstone photo); another similar entry exists, Find A Grave Memorial# 7593706 (Southold) - a duplicate or perhaps cenotaph?

But one William Ludlam had a son, Anthony baptized 1643. When viewing Matlock baptismal entries on the Matlock church CD purchased (2017) one reads: "?ndlam Antonie ?ndlam William 08/10/1643" which suggests that an Antonie (Anthony) ______, son of Wm _______ was baptized Oct 8, 1643, with the surname approximating Ludlam, re n=u. Also "England, Derbyshire, Church of England Parish Registers, 1537-1918," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBF4-KMN : 29 December 2014), Anthonie Ludlam, 08 Oct 1643; citing Christening, Matlock, Matlock, Derbyshire, England, Record Office, Matlock; FHL microfilm 2,081,963. Is Anthony c1643 the same man as Anthony c1631? Has anyone reconciled this? Note that the Matlock ENG church registry commences 1637, so perhaps we are to ask the question as to whether this could be a later recording of a baptism--but then one would expect to find other children entered as well. Dr. Ludlum, p93, also writes of a 1651 birthdate being too late for the man, Anthony Ludlam, who had "assembled his own whaling company" and who had "sold and donated real estate;" he further dismisses the concept of a 2nd wife for Wm2 (needed to bear him a child in 1651.)

Compare Adams, James Truslow, 1878-1949. Memorial of Old Bridgehampton. Bridgehampton, L. I.: Priv print. [at the press of the Bridgehampton news], 1916. Here on p85, author Adams informs "Among the first settlers, as already mentioned, were Anthony Ludlam, father of the one buried in the cemetery here [Mecox], * * *." See Hathitrust, p85: https://hdl.handle.net/2027/loc.ark:/13960/t4th8sf1c?urlappend=%3Bseq=103

7. John Ludlam - ___/1650, Matlock, Eng - Find A Grave Memorial# 182124889.

8. Joseph Ludlam - 1646/1698 - Youngest child. Find A Grave Memorial# 68356678. Importantly, Mann refers all to read "excellent articles:" (1) NYGB Record, Vol. 47, p309, by George W. Cocks; (2) TAG, Vol 14, p4, July 1937, by Clarence Almon Torrey, Esq. When viewing Matlock baptismal entries on the CD which I purchased (2017) from Val Neal, of Middleton, Matlock, one reads, in part: "Ludlam ? Ludlam William 09/08/1646" which suggests that Joseph was baptized Aug 9, 1646 (although yes, his 1st name is omitted here but the date aligns). It seems that Clemence died due to Joseph's childbirth...

Importantly, Clemence did not bear children after her demise, so no child could have been born 1647+...

Whether the many Ludlam findagrave entries at St Giles Churchyard [Church of Eng], Matlock mostly link to this family is unknown. Perhaps a clue is embedded within the entertaining 2009 storybook, Ghost Writer: Mary Ludlam Scudder: Silent For 300 Years by Phyllis Rowland, author. It infers that Wm2’s wife, Clemence Fordham Ludlam (1604/4 Aug 1646 in 41st yr of her age) is buried at St. Giles Church, 116 Church Street, Matlock DE4 3BZ (01629 582199). Wm Packing’s informative webpage explains that Clemence, born Sacombe, Herfordshire ENG is the daughter of Phillip Fordham and Eliz. Shotbolt, and is a sister of Rev. Robert Fordham.

Author, Conklin Mann's 1943 article places the family of Anthony & Zerviah ____[Hudson?] Ludlow, and their 4 children (Anthony, Samuel, Mary [Mary Ludlam Ludlow Hedges of Morristown], Ann) in a slightly different branch of the Anthony line [instead via Patience Barnes Ludlam/Anthony4 Ludlam (1671/1723)>Samuel5 b. circa 1700, died testate 1766 NY, probated 1767, husband of Mary Sayre, d/o Daniel Sayre] than that recently set forth via the sources outlined in the Mary Ludlam Ludlow Hedges revised findagrave bio. So imperfection due to sources cited exists. Mann's logic seems to fit.

Nov. 2, 1667.
This day the will of William Ludlam was proved
in court. (Minutes of Court of Assizes)
Note.— William Ludlam lived at the water mill near the village of Southampton. This was the first water mill in Suflolk County. His son Joseph moved to Oyster Bay and has many descendants who retain the name of Ludlam. The families in Southampton have changed it to Ludlow. This will was recorded in Liber i. page i [i=1?], New York Sur-rogate’s ofice, but the first three pages are lost. The original Will however, is among the original documents in the office, and from it the above copy was made.[end of transcription][minor scanning errors edited Jun 2017 by DBardes, and square bracketed notes added]

Author Pelletreau informs us that this Wm2 Ludlam was in Southampton as early as 1653.

LDS Church of Eng Parish Registers point to Clemence Fordham/Wm2 Ludlam family. A female, Clement Ludlam, was buried 21 Aug 1646; she was the spouse of a Wm Ludlam. [England, Derbyshire, Church of England Parish Registers, 1537-1918," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KBF4-RNK : 29 December 2014), William Ludlam in entry for Clement Ludlam, 21 Aug 1646; citing Burial, Matlock, Matlock, Derbyshire, England, Record Office, Matlock; FHL microfilm 2,081,963.] Clemence died 1646 prior to Anthony's alleged 1651 birth, a fatal flaw.

Unknown Graves at old cemetery projected to number 1700?: On a findagrave photo request for Thomas Halsey (1593/1678), this note was kindly added by findagraver Jeffrey Jerrett (#48128221) Jan 16, 2017: ("In 2016 the Southampton Historical Committee recruited a cemetery mapper to survey the Old Southampton Burial Grounds with ground penetrating radar. To their surprise some 1700 unknown graves were found. Their plan is to provide a compilation of 17th century census data so descendants can infer whether or not their ancestor is buried there. They also hope to find a grant which will allow them to search for discarded and buried headstones on the burial grounds.")

LUDLOW NEWSLETTER A GEM OF SOURCED INSIGHT: With special thanks for the encouragement found in the wonderful pdf online newsletter published by Editor, Ruth V. McKee, 3131 18th Ave So., Minneapolis MN 55407 [1998]). Entitled "Ludlow Newsletter, About Ludlows, Ludlams & Ludlums" --see section entitled "A is also for Anthony" in Vol 1, No. 2, 1998, p4-6 - Ruth's layout and sources made it possible -- to even think that the elusive Anthony Ludlam of Long Island was findable. Also thanks for informative clarity of Deby Von Wert Justice's webpage (rootsweb, 2003), Descendants of Wm Ludlam.

ISSUE OF UNKNOWN ANTHONY LUDLAM IN MATLOCK, 1647-1661
But seeking direction on Wm2's elusive brother, Anthony Ludlam b. say 1607 (with another named ?brother being Obadiah Ludlam, as per Wm Packing's outline,
http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/p/a/c/William-Packing/BOOK-0001/0002-0002.html leaves unanswered riddles. Author Peter Ross, His. of Long Island: From Its Earliest Settlement (1903), v.3 p191, googlebooks, also mentions these three brothers in his profile of James M. Ludlam of Oyster Bay; Ross writes that either Obadiah or Anthony settled on Mecox Bay, in 1640, after the three initially arrived at Roslyn, Long Island. Incredibly, the first entry on The Bryant Library's Timeline of Roslyn History, http://bryantlibrary.org/local-history-v15-172/timeline-of-roslyn-history speaks of Clemence Fordham Ludlam's brother, the reverend's arrival 1643: "1643 Robert Fordham & John Carmen sail across Long Island Sound from Connecticut, land in Hempstead Harbor & go south to settle Hempstead Village. 1644 More settlers from Connecticut arrive and stay in Hempstead Harbor area (later called Roslyn)."

When viewing Matlock baptismal entries on the CD purchased (2017) from Val Neal, Matlock, at least six children are named, issue of a man or men, Anthony Ludlam (but unknown if this is hopeful brother of Wm2 Ludlam), but adding Dr. Ludlum's TAG details (1953) shows at least 3 deaths/7 kids chronologically listed below:

+ Thomas filius Anthony Ludlam sepult May 28th, Anno Domino 1647 (son of Anthony, Thomas died)
1. Ludlam Mary Ludlam Anthony 30/05/1647 bapt.

2. Ludlam Elizabeth Ludlam Anthony 11/03/1649 bapt
+ also on burial list: Elizabeth filia Anthony sepult April 19, 1651 (same date as Helen's baptism, so dau., Eliz. d.y.)

3a. Ludlam Ales Ludlam Anthony 08/04/1651 bapt. [Ales? Helen?) Ludlam 1651 not found on Dr Ludlum's Matlock Register?]
3b. "Helen filia Anthony Ludlam bapt April 19, Anno Domini 1651" by Dr. Ludlum p94 [Helen Ludlam 1651 not found on church CD?]

4. Ludlam Anthony Ludlam Anthony 06/11/1653 bapt (Anno Domini 1653 by Dr Ludlum p94) [??Is he buried at Mecox??]

5. Ludlam Anne Ludlam Anthony 20/01/1656 bapt (named as Anna by Dr Ludlum p94)

6. Ludlam William Ludlam Anthony 04/06/1658 bapt
+ _________ filius Anthony Ludlam sepult Feb 10th 1661/62 (so unnamed son of Anthony d.y.- say Wm 1658 or Anthony 1653?)

Whether Anthony Ludlam c1653 baptized, son of Anthony (shown above, provided he was not the son who died 1661) could be entwined with Anthony c1643, son of Wm2 needs further investigation. Since Dr. Walter D. Ludlum Sr's TAG article, p95 mentions a Thomas Ludlam, as a possible brother of William1/Mary (father of Wm2) and many other Ludlams are named in the Matlock Church Registry, no conclusion can be reached as to which Anthony Ludlam the issue above connect back to...
