Well educated, he spoke English, French, Spanish, German and Hebrew. He was elected a state representative to the Second Texas Legislature in 1847 and served one term. He and his half-brother established a land company to sell land to settlers and at one time he had a million acres. He and his partner laid out the town of Waco in 1848.
