Sterling is a son of Jonathan Heaton and Lucy Elizabeth Carroll - the ninth of their eleven children. His father practiced plural marriage and had more than one wife and more sons. He had fifteen sons altogether. The families lived in the Moccasin area of Arizona near the Utah border and the Kaibab Indian reservation.

Sterling registered for the World War I draft in September 1918. He was 20 years old and was a farmer and stock raiser. He was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.

Sterling married Jane Myrtle White on May 22, 1924 in St. George, Utah.
