American Scholar, Educator and Author. Recognized authority on Shakespeare, Tennyson and Thoreau, writing more a dozen scholarly works from Thoreau's Walden to The Rise of Formal Satire in England. Educated at University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. Authored many books on the English language and educational methods. Contributed to verse, short stories, educational journals and many publications. Listed in Who's Who in America. Son of famous writer Isabella Alden, known as Pansy. When his mother was ill one Christmas she asked him to write a story. He wrote Why The Chimes Rang, which was a favored children's book staying in print for seventy five years. Director of the Drama League of America from it's founding in 1914. Received Dr. of Philosophy at University of Pennsylvania, served as a Professor of literature at Stanford University and the University of Illinois. Taught English, literature and rhetoric while at Stanford. Harvard bestowed the A.M. degree upon him. Was selected to give the William Vaughn Moody lectures beginning at the University of Chicago, completing a tour of many eastern cities.
